Castello de Falconibus, Via Lunga Degli Aborigeni, Pulsano, Province of Taranto, Italy
Castello De Falconibus
The De Falconibus Castle, located in the centre of Pulsano, overlooks Piazza Castello and has a quadrangular plan distinguished by the presence of five towers. Originally used as a hunting estate and consisting of a single square tower, it was built in 1430 (according to other sources in 1463) on the initiative of Marino Senior De Falconibus, Secretary to the Prince of Taranto Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo-Orsini. Today the De Falconibus Castle, which preserves the coats of arms of the De Falconibus and Muscettola families, is used as an exhibition space for art exhibitions and houses the Pulsano municipal council.
Many legends have been associated with the castle over the centuries. Prominent among them is the tale whose protagonist is Angelica, the only daughter of Renzo De Falconibus. After the death of her father, legend has it that the girl was captured, tortured and buried alive within the walls of the fortress, which is still haunted by her ghost on full moon nights.
